Desk

Living Space

I explored my desk for this photo series. I spent so much time at my desk doing homework, business, and just dinking around. It seemed only right that I should explore a space that I spend so much of my life at.

In this photo set I attempted to create abstract images from the clutter on my desk.

Movement

Movement Photography

This photo series is inspired by Ronald Compton. His work portrays movement, energy, and the human body.

I enjoyed doing these photos so much!! I was lucky enough to have two beautiful models to pose for me, and even luckier that they where graceful and understood movement. I believe that I was able to put together a strong set of photos that drew inspiration from Mr. Compton’s work while staying true to my self.

Ronald Compton Inspired

Artist Inspired

I drew inspiration from an artist by the name of Ronald Compton. Mr. Compton’s work is all about movement and the human form. Many of his photos are of bodyscapes, dancers, and flowing fabrics. He does commercial dancer portraits and simple portraits  along with his more artsy work.

Ronald Compton is an amazing photographer with a ability to portray movement and energy. I will be studying his work on my next photo series, and hopefully I will be able to capture the same movement and energy he does.

Wall Street, 1915 by Paul Strand

Paul Strand's "Wall Street, 1915"

Paul Strand was an American photographer born in New York City. He studied under Lewis Hine (the photojournalist).

Paul Strand successfully sought out details in an everyday situation, and was able to turn the photograph its self into a real life translation into abstract art that captured energy and movement. Strands framing is spot on, the diagonal lines and partial shapes create a sense of forward movement. The actual situation is simply people walking down a street, the image its self is of movement and energy.  Details like the forward action of the people, shadows jetting backward, and perspectives moving back into space all give the feeling of movement. In all Wall Street is the ideal example of photographic abstraction and realist cubism.

The Documentary Impulse

1.     To discover new things
2.     To understand what you have discovered
3.     To relay your discoveries
4.     To creatively relay your discoveries
5.     To make the audience understand what you understand
6.     To use documentary work to reflect
7.     To take in knowledge and keep it
8.     To take your discoveries in the real world and imagine greater
9.     To stop and think about what we are relaying to others
10. Use our ability to relay to make a difference in the world

While reading the Documentary Impulse, I had to stop and reread the part about the little girl that would dream about things to lock away knowledge.  Maybe its because I am a teenager now and all I want to do in go into a deep hibernation, but I don’t remember anything that I dream about. I don’t even remember anything about what happens after I wake up. My mornings are always hazy as I go step by step through my morning routine.
In my images I attempted to creatively relay my mornings by experimenting with camera angles. I used the natural morning sun to help convey a dream like state of mind. Odd camera angles and intermittent images of myself to give the feeling that I’m not quite there and to maybe make the viewer feel more like they are in the story I am telling.

Iconic Moments From Our Generation.

Iconic moment one Kanye vs. Taylor

The first moment I have chosen is Kanye West cutting off Taylor Swift at the MTV Music Awards.  Seems kind of ridiculous to choose this as an iconic moment but it has some real substance to it when you look at it closely. Every time I think about this moment my mind run wild on lessons about karma, irony, Americas obsession with pop idols, bullying, stereotypes, music, and more.  The Kanye Swift incident at the MVT awards is a moment that gets repeatedly brought up in my life and it always sparks some sort of though process in me.

Iconic moment two The Royal Wedding

The royal wedding is a recent event but it will clearly be an iconic moment for the world. I am of Welsh decent so by blood I have no devotion to the Royal family, but that does not stop me from admiring and drawing inspiration from it. All the fun outfits, decorations, and hats not to mention the historic value of the ceremony all had an impact on me. I found myself puling inspiration for drawing from photos of the wedding that I saw on the Internet and on the covers of magazines in Barns and Noble. I was like a little girl wooing over the dresses and crests and flowers. I know at this point it all sound cheesy, but the Royal Wedding is defiantly a iconic moment for me.

Iconic moment three San Jose Mine

This picture really got to me. I remember when I first saw the news about the mine collapsing I though it was sad but I didn’t really have a connection to it. I new it was a bad thing but the people didn’t exactly seem real to me or something so I just went on living. 70 days later all the men where successfully rescued and this photo emerged.  The emotion in this mans face made things seems real. Its photos like this that make me shiver and realize things. This photo is one of the most emotional images I think I will ever see.
